Our oldest stepson left this morning for a college 9 hours away. He is my youngest stepchild, therefore this is the beginning of a new way of life…and a different home environment. When one becomes a step parent of two teenagers, as I did, six years ago, the dynamics of how discipline and homelife run is very different. There is an adjustment period that lasts, say six years… lol. For me personally, I am always aware that while I may see my two stepchildren as my own, they are always aware that their “real” mother lives in Oklahoma. I do not dispute nor wish to compete, for she is their real mother, but there are some very real realities that they lived full time with me for the past six and a half years. Mainly this comes into play for Son2 now, for he got away with murder in some ways, as my natural son, for there were some things he got away with murder on. I always felt aware of disciplining either of my stepchildren, and for the most part, we tried very hard to let the natural parent be the one who “came down on” which ever child for their issue….Son2 has enjoyed letting Son1 be the other boy that “it wasn’t me” implied when things were done or not done. Its going to be a hard reality this year as a 10th grader, there’s no one to blame/share the blame with now! ๐ If something isn’t done or is done, he’s standing in the spotlight alone….it should be interesting.
We’re down to two children in the house….its a different world….and Son1 just checked in and he made it all 561 miles by himself…quite the feat for a boy who has never driven over an hour alone. He said his apartment (Yes, I’m still appalled we ended up renting an apartment for he and a roommate) is really nice and he is very excited about starting classes tomorrow at college.
God is good! I am so thankful son1 made it there safely.
