It’s the dawning of spring at #thetackybrownhouse. We have lived in our renovation project for twelve continuous months now and it definitely is home. Buying a house at auction was a risky thing for us, we sought coming to our little town because it is a quieter place than our previous city. The three acres we currently own has the possibility of becoming 13 with more land available. The house had been mistreated by its previous owners and simply needed to be cared for on many levels. Her bones were amazing, her construction solid, but her finery was long gone and she had been seriously neglected where beautification was concerned.
This house has become home for our family, more so I think because it is smaller, meaning we don’t go off into our own dens, we live and play in the same living room, we work in the same office, and we love the outside in this house.
Our master bedroom and new small bath is under construction still and we’re dealing with it. The winter brought the joy of the fireplace in the living room fully restored and many winter nights were enjoyed in front of a beautiful bed of fire and coals.
The kitchen sports an island we still haven’t painted, but love to cook in. We’ve entertained here much more than our previous two homes which were both larger and more geared for croweds, but somehow our friends say they find solitude here, and we love that.
Buying the tacky brown house was perhaps one of the riskiest moves we’ve made as a family. It was an illogical choice, owning another home that isn’t paid for, paying cash for this one at auction and using part time work funds to pay for its renovation as we can. It has been one of the best choices of our lives. It is a place we love to call home, the outdoors beckon to us to play, the light of this home makes my heart smile. Sometimes, despite all logical reasoning, we just have to follow our hearts…and I am thankful we did.
It’s been a long road to where we are….and plenty left to do, a reminder of where we started…
