Our First Year Garden in Oklahoma

| Sweetie Berry | No Comments

My history with gardening has not been one that produced beautiful imagery in my memories. My memories are more like barren boxes and overgrown vines. Leggy plants were my specialty the first few times I tried to plant from seed. I could get them to grow, but then they’d shoot up from probably too much watering and fold over as if to say “I’m done now” before they ever hit the soil. This year we made paper pods to begin our growing

This year the challenge is that I don’t know this growing area (7a) and I’m not sure what grows in this area.  So we started by using the seeds we have saved from other heirloom plants and made newspaper seed pods to begin the seeds indoors in February.  I always get excited about seeing them grow in the windows!

Our area of NE Oklahoma has a later frost date than we’re used to, so our first round of in the ground plantings were quickly mostly swallowed up by a late March freeze. (Who has hail and snow in late March ?)  Thankfully we hadn’t put all the plants out, so we were able to go again and now that May is almost here we’re excited to pick our salad greens for the first time at Sweetieland, Oklahoma.

Do you garden? What do you like to grow? (flowers are my favorite!) What has worked for you?
