The morning brought no more rain after days of rainy wet mornings. Our yard in town had already gotten shin high, and the push mower our son had had capooted on his watch. A few hours did not improve the situation, so he borrowed a mower and got his yard back under control. The mower being out for the count was not on this month’s budget, so that was a boo hiss moment.
As we pulled out of our driveway, I noticed the new neighbors were putting things to the curb. As we drove by not once but twice I realized it was all of the former owners irises. IRISES! I grew up calling them flags, and this neighbor had hundreds of them, I had so admired them for five years. A third trip by and my husband stopped and asked if they were out for the trash, neatly dug up in clumps, the newlywed said “help yourself” and we brought home over fifty! Purples, yellows, whites, oh how joyful to know next spring there will be more flags at the Perch!
Back home at the perch all 3 acres needed attention, but first there were sticks to pick up and limbs to move.
We still have trees down and large branches we’re working on bit by bit to overcome, but the front yard and back were mowed and cleaned up. The new irises planted and several hours later three happy, but exhausted family members came inside for dinner together. I think my heroes are both my daughter and husband who take on such chores without complaint. We played a bit with Babe, our lab and by then dinner was ready! A good Saturday for us all…spring is indeed here and it is good to work together as a family.
