The last few months we purchased a 1965 ranch home and three acres of property about six miles from our previous home. It had been a long term goal for Dh (dear husband) and I so return to a simpler home and a bit of land. In January we found a bank owned property that fit the bill. This week we’e been working on a new master bedroom and a future second bath. A bit battle weary from the complete overhaul, we decided to take a week and do some aesthetically pleasing color work. (colors in my world do a heart good) and so we did.
In my part of the woods hunting is a preferred hobby. I cannot disagree with the thrill of the hunt, but my idea of fun is scouting the unusual antique, or yard sailing (so much more fun to imagine sailing, than sale-ing) to find that set of specific china, or to discover something roadside that you simply love (of course that often requires rose colored glasses until you actually restore it)
The master bedroom is very small. 13 x13. We took a single garage and built it in creating space for a laundry center, the bedroom and a small private bath. At present we will only focus on the bedroom and laundry space, waiting until fall to do the bath. (a girl can only do so much at a time while being a full time wife, Mom, Grandmother and the other hats I wear )
I thought today I’d share a few peaks at what’s been going on! Here’s the new color in the washroom. Our electrician just got married in the sweetest ceremony and he has taken a very happy sabbatical and I think that’s the perfect reason to let the bathroom light wait.
A few weeks ago I found a CL (Craigslist) ad for a 3 piece solid wood entertainment center with lighted shelves. I’m not a great fan of an entertainment center, but this one would give me serious storage and function in the new bedroom as well as flow for a few items I’d like to showcase. The wood was lovely but well, dark wood, so against my ever focused on preservation upbringing, I decided this baby needed to be painted.
First we kilzed it, then layered Dove White with two coats to give it a smooth creamy white look. The trip in the house was not fun for the cabinet is large, heavy and we had 3 corners to make with it, but the guys did it and managed to get it vertical in the space. It’ll be worth moving around twice as we do the flooring to have it while we wait for the flooring to come in! Yes, the eaves are open…we are waiting on the structural engineer, but plan to open the ceiling for the height it adds!
We’ll finish trim and walls on Monday. After two rounds of paint on the wall we chose Manchester Tan at 75% color, the lovely darker shades of khaki just turned plain brown in the bedroom. Our light is low there with only one large window, and I wanted to wake up with serenity not depression, so though I love more vivid colors, the walls in the new room simply didn’t support them. I already love the layering of creamy whites and they will make the colorful things I’m bringing in the room pop with comfort. Little Bit, our youngest grandchild, we call her The Inspector, was with me this week. Her brother had a bit of surgery and is doing well, but we put her to work here, to give her brother a chance to heal.
The room lighting is not in, but the look is exactly as I imagined this when it was found as a yard sailing type CL item!
There are glass shelves and lighting on the side units and the much needed storage on the bottom half. I am well pleased with the look and the hardware I found at Target will add the feel of custom furniture as we use it throughout the builtins and this piece as we work on the room.
Does it make since to take time to paint and move furniture when the room has so far to go? Probably not, but this girl needed the joy of seeing a few areas of the house in their new colors so I can be re engergized for the next few weeks of floor laying, tiling, and the war on sawdust resuming. Paint is such a beautiful thing! As part of the “Year of Allowing” I decided I may enjoy the week when we were unexpectedly delayed with flooring.
This weekend Les (DH) and I celebrate our twelvth anniversary as a blended family. I am so very thankful and excited to be his wife. We began our marriage with four children among us in a time blended families were not the norm. We’ve all flourished and the work of choosing to put the difficult behind and maintain peace among the families has paid off. It truly is a joyful place called home and this weekend we will celebrate just that!
I’m excited for next week we’re bringing home the French Provincial Breakfront… the piece we chose for our anniversary….and of course, you knew it would….it will require …wait for it….another painting project!
Happy Weekend!
